Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 5:3
I never really understood this until earlier today. I had a revelation come to me about what it may mean... I think Jesus meant that people who have lost everything and have no one and nothing else to turn to, must turn to a Higher Power.
Therefore, those who feel like they have nowhere, no one, and nothing else to turn turn to, ultimately turn to a Higher Power - You know the saying: "There are no atheists in foxholes." Here's a thought that makes it vivid for me...I think about September 11, 2001, and the images of the people jumping to their deaths. I imagine that even an atheist in that position would jump with at least a tiny glimmer of the hope of a God or a some type of afterlife.
Here is another translation of mine about Jesus' statement: "the lower and more beaten down by life you feel, the closer you are to turning yourself over to a Higher Power and remembering God, which is Love."
